Erdinger Wheat Beer, Steins, Richmond Riverside |
Stein's is probably one of Richmond's best kept secrets. It's located further down the riverside, away from the summer crowds basking on the grassy banks next to Richmond Bridge. Being German it is popular with Richmond's ex-pat community who live mostly in Ham and enjoy a nice cycle ride in. We've been coming to Stein's a bit this summer as its the perfect place to enjoy sunsets, a quiet pint and a schnitzel.

Steins on Richmond's Riverside - Thames River, London |
It is quirky and unconventional - there is only one loo and it is outside, also, you can't order a beer without ordering food first, and you need to carefully read the menu. If you can get over that, it is one of the few places in Richmond that you can enjoy eating riverside without breaking the bank. Richmond council has very strict rules around licensing on the river and has stopped any further developments on the riverside.

Schnitzel - Steins Bavarian, Richmond Riverside |
Because of this Steins enjoy a relatively competitive free environment at one of the most desirable spots in town, and without competition, complacency slips in, and indeed it has slid all the way at Steins. If you order bratwurst you will get one sausage on a plate with a roll - that's it, they take forrrrrreeeeeeverrrr to serve customers and require you to wait in two separate queues - one for food and then one for beer, and no matter how nicely you ask for a pretzel to eat while you wait - they still won't bring it to your table until your food comes out, actually they didn't bring it out at all and we had to ask for it again. They will also close early if they don't fancy the weather or the crowd. So you have been warned.

Pork Shoulder with Dumplings, Steins Bavarian, Richmond Riverside |
Despite all of Steins aggravating characteristics, you can enjoy half decent Bavarian food and great beer. I especially like the Erdinger as it matches perfectly with the food, but it has a bite and if you don't treat it with respect you will pay for it the next day.
I would recommend the schnitzel, and the pork shoulder is ok as well. This comes with two large dumplings and a delicious purple cabbage. If your feeling especially famished and have a large crowd you can order their table long platter for 100 quid, this is popular with office parties. They serve wine as well, but really? Why would you? Beer is the only thing that goes.

Prezel & Bratwurst, Steins, Richmond Riverside |
I would come to Steins probably during the week as it does get busy during the weekends, it has a small playground for the kids too so is popular with families. There is space to park your bike if you fancy a cycle along the river but its just as lovely walking too. Richmond and Twickenham have some of the nicest spots in London to enjoy the river and this location is no exception.
