Tenerife, Canary Islands

Mount Tiede, Tenerife, Canary Islands

It's a short get away and great way to get some sunshine in the middle of winter with only a four and a half hour flight from London. It was fairly mild when we went late January - around 20-22 degrees celsius. We headed for the Costa Adeje on the south coast of Tenerife and pitched up at a lovely hotel - Gran Tacande close to the beach.

Village at Masca, Tenerife
We arranged a day tour of the island that took us around half of the isle. I was surprised at the geographical diversity, Tenerife is basically a volcanic island with quite a dramatic landscape and a micro climate - some parts of the island can be shrouded in mist while other areas like the South will be sunny and warm.

At the centre of the island is Mt Tide and an absolute for folk to visit which is in the Tiede National Park, as is the Masca Gorge which has stunning vistas. It is a cliff-hanging ride through the valley to Masca but well worth it.

South Tenerife where we were based is a popular tourist spot that is looking a little dated now but it is a great cheap getaway for the masses. It is heavily populated with older folk and I'm not sure if this is down to the time of year we went, but it was lovely nevertheless. It is difficult to get around on the island - it takes a lot of walking to get anywhere from Adeje if you're like us and want to get out and explore.

Plenty of chill out space at Gran Tacande Hote
It was hard to find excellent restaurants for food and service, but we did find one or two and we had a delicious meal at a road side tavern with local wine for very cheap - three courses and a caraf for 5 quid each. We also had a great lunch at the Empire Restaurant that serves modern British Cuisine and La Nonna (check out my review for La Nonna next week) which is very highly rated with excellent wine.

Overall it is a great get away winter getaway, if you like this you might like my trip to Hvar in Croatia where the food and wine is excellent and have amazing beaches, ample sailing and islands to explore. This is my blog post about it here.

Beautiful restaurant settings dining in Adeje

I've done a separate post on La Nonna restaurant which was a fabulous restaurant not far from our hotel at Gran Tacande.

Le Salon Prive Restaurant, St Margarets Twickenham

Le Salon Prive Restaurant, St Margarets, Twickenham La Salon Prive (The Private Lounge) is actually a newly re-invigorated, and much needed refurbished Brula - a French Bistro restaurant based in St Margaret's, Twickenham for over 15 years. The restaurant went through an ownership change back in January (the former owners having connections with other Richmond restaurants, La Buvette and A Cena, as well as Covent Garden restaurant Joe Allens). The new proprietor happens to be the same owner of a very popular Italian restaurant, Bacco, in Richmond. Bacco is one of my top Italian fine dining eats and here's a  review of Bacco  here. Entrance to Le Salon Prive, Dining Room La Salon have kept the lovely glass stained windows but have totally redone the inside. Formerly the restaurant resembled something similar to your geriatric granny's living room - it might seem charming but it really felt like it had been under-invested, incidentally a similar theme also exist

Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Chelsea, London

IT STARTS as soon as you pull up outside Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, the service, that is. Staff are with you every step, at your beck and call, although there's no need to beck or call - they're always one step ahead. It may be disconcerting for some folk but if you've not experienced 3* service before, relax, enjoy it, don't fall into the trap of thinking this type of place is only frequented by fancy folk who think they're the above it all. It's a place where people are celebrating and enjoying themselves. GR has a cosy, simple and relaxed ambience, not an opulent over the top dining room as you'd expect for a 3 Michelin restaurant. It's welcoming. Lightly smoked Goose We arrived in perfect timing for our booking and were greeted with smiles and 'hello's' by numerous staff as we were shown to our table. I was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few tables already occupied considering our booking was quite early at 6.30pm. We w
