The Crown Twickenham

Smoked Haddock with Risotto, The Crown Twickenham

Boy has it been a mission trying to reserve a table at The Crown. I've obviously been leaving it too late - every time I have tried to secure a Fri or Sat evening reservation, there have been none, two days out.
It is especially hard if there is rugby on, sooooo, if you want an evening meal here at a popular time or even a weekend lunch you may have to book a week out.

Entrance to The Crown, Twickenham

I have been a regular here at The Crown for a few years now, I played tennis not far from the pub and would often hobble down, post game, for a well earned refreshment and a meal. When I first arrived in Twickenham around 7 years ago, The Crown was under different ownership and was run down, apart from the odd decent Jazz band passing through, it wasn't thriving. However, since then it has been completely re-furbished from top to bottom, has been running under new management for a few years and is now one of the best run Pubs in the area, and their have serious food game here too. In addition to this, during summer it is one of the most popular places in the Borough due to its beautifully presented garden area.

Pork with spinach and dauphinoise, The Crown Twickenham
We have quite an early booking at 6pm, and it is already heaving at that time on a Saturday. The front bar is open to food and drinks but there is also a classy restaurant area to the pub at the rear. We had a wait to order drinks, but they were busy. We decided on a nice Chilean Chardonnay to pair nicely with the starters - sesame prawns with wasabi and lime dressing. It was a while after our starters arrived that and we had to check on our drink order and sometime after that .... well you'll see what happens (if you haven't already seen) in the clip above.

Smoked Haddock with Risotto, The Crown Twickenham
For my mains I had a (real) smoked haddock (not that fake coloured sh*te you get in the supermarkets) served on risotto with poached egg and shaved parmesan. It was a protein loaded, carbohydrate saturated, sensation on a plate. Mammoth sized food and reasonably priced to match. The week before I had been at The Kings Head in Teddington, they also do great food at reasonable prices. My PIC had the most succulent pork from their Specials Menu, served with a dauphinoise. I am delighted to say that the dauphinoise was much better from what I had a week before. We finished with a great cheese board with very generous portions and great selection of sophisticated cheeses.

If you live in Twickenham and haven't had dinner at The Crown yet, it is definitely worth a visit - if you'd like a touch of poise away from your regular boozer then you must go.
